Maxi Dresses to Sew for One Smashing and Stylish Summer

It’s the season for girls dresses this year, we recommend that you go maxi.
And since we support all things DIY, we also recommend that you sew your own maxi dresses. With so many gorgeous fabrics, it is easy to make stylish maxi dresses that can carry your style all through summer long.
Check out the sewing tutorials below for inspiration.

1. TIERED TUBE STYLE

I love so many things about this DIY maxi summer dress.

I love the tube style, the pink color, and the fun tiered look by the bottom. This looks like an easy sewing project, too. If you use knit fabric for this sewing pattern, you don’t even have to bother with those pesky zippers or buttons.

2. EASY TANK TOP STYLE

This is so lovely and simple. I am tempted to make one in all of my favorite colors.

This tank top style DIY maxi dress will require only two parts: the back and the front. If you want a clean edge look for the arm holes and necklines, you can also cut about a yard of bias tape. Knit fabric is recommended for this sewing project.

3. DESIGNER-INSPIRED SCARF DRESS

This fun DIY maxi summer dress is inspired by a Michael Kors design. It is an incredibly easy sewing project that will set you back only about $20.

Awesome, right?

Made of three printed silk scarves, you can construct a similar dress in under half an hour. Make sure that you use scarves with dark border and classy prints. Add leather cord for straps and you’re all set.

4. JERSEY SHEET MAXI DRESS

You know what’s a great material for making dresses?
Bed sheets.
I have been known to use some for sundresses and skirts. And you can grab one jersey sheet from the home ware department to make a lovely girls maxi dress for the summer. The pattern below gives us a dress with sleeves but you can also do the first and second styles we featured here.

5. GATHERED WAIST STYLE

This is another easy DIY summer maxi dress pattern. This has sleeves but they will not be cut separately from the rest of the bodice. This sleeve style is so easy to do, you will likely be tempted to make a short dress and blouse version, too.

6. FLOWER-EMBELLISHED MAXI

How pretty! This pattern is very similar to the tank top style I have mentioned here. But this takes things a step further by adding facing to the arm holes and neckline. The addition of fabric flowers by the shoulder is also a stroke of elegant genius.

7. TANK TOP REMAKE

Your DIY summer maxi doesn’t have to be constructed from scratch. If you don’t have enough material for a maxi, you can use a tank top for the upper section. Something plain will look nice with a printed jersey fabric bottom.

Which of these maxi dress patterns will you be giving a try first?
Personally, I’d go with the ones made of jersey or knit fabric. Not only is the material easy to work with, it’s quite comfortable on hot days, too. They come in many fun prints as well so you won’t exactly be stuck with plain maxi dresses.
